Vikings is back and it looks like it’s going to be as blood thirsty as ever.
The first episode of season 5B is finally out, after what seems to be forever, and let us tell you it did not disappoint.
Right away we’re reminded of Lagertha’s defeat as Ivar The Boneless returns just as fierce as we had hoped, and demands his people of Kattegat to ‘hail their new king.’
By his side is King Harald, who we can’t help but feel sorry for, as he battles with his conscience after killing his brother Halfdan.
But even though we can tell he is hurting, we’re also quite afraid of Harald as he has joined forces with Ivar in an attempt to take down their former Queen.
Throughout the first half of the series, the family aspect hadn’t been as strong, as the Sons Of Ragnar decided to split and turn on each other in a civil war.
But now they have strongly formed their sides, it looks like we’ll get back the bonds and family strength we have all been missing.
And speaking of family, uncle Rollo has returned to lend a helping hand in Ivar’s attempt to assassinate Lagertha.
Although not quite as rugged looking as he was when he used to live in Kattegat, we’re pleased to say that the Count no longer has the perfect conditioned bob and appears to have sacked off his dapper ways while travelling back to Kattegat.
Phew.
But he doesn’t just reappear to offer an alliance with Ivar, no, Rollo is full of baggage and we didn’t expect him to unload it all in the first episode.
Director Michael Hirst has wasted no time, and has just gone straight in to answering all the questions surrounding Rollo.
Just as we’d thought, Rollo is Bjorn’s father.
While we can’t help but feel slightly disappointed that there was no build up to this vital piece of information slipping out, we’re now excited to see what’s to come of this, as if Ivar catches wind that Bjorn has no rightful claim to the throne, it’s clear he will use this to his full advantage.
When Bjorn finds out Rollo’s theory, he laughs at his new father, before stating what we’re all thinking, and we fully agree with what he says.
‘Who do I look the most like? And who do I resemble most in spirit and in principle? That undoubtedly is Ragnar.’
He’s not wrong.
But it all seems to escalate really quickly from there, as Bjorn then vows to kill Rollo and attempts to take him out before spitting: ‘You are not worth the time it takes to clean the blood off my axe.’
Even though the fight between the two could have been way more dramatic, thankfully for Rollo their scuffle is over really fast, leaving us sat there thinking: ‘What just happened?’
Back at Kattegat, it seems Ivar has found a new love, in the form of Freydis – a girl he can confide in and open up to ‘like no other.’
But do we trust her?
The new romance has got us asking all of the questions, like will Freydis become Ivar’s queen? Does she really love him, or is there another motive behind her interest in Ivar?
We know that Vikings is full of betrayal, so this could be another attempt at taking down Ivar?
We can’t help but feel that we have another Margrethe on our hands – and we’re worried.
Looks like the new king is going to have to watch his back, as he doesn’t appear to have a lot of fans right now.
At least he has Harald on his side – or does he?
Vikings continues next Wednesday on the History Channel.
